How to Make a Garden Pavilion

A garden pavilion can be a great addition to your backyard. It provides a place to rest or entertain family and friends. Pavilions can also be a centerpiece of a flower garden. Depending on your needs, you can use a free plan or build a custom outdoor pavilion.

Regardless of the type of pavilion you choose, there are certain steps to follow in order to create a sturdy structure. The first step is to dig a solid foundation. This should be set on concrete piers. If your area has heavy winters, you may want to increase the slope of the roof.

You should be able to locate some local building codes that will help you determine the size of the holes you will need to drill. Once you have determined the size of your holes, you will need a spirit level to check them to make sure they are plumb.

Next, you need to assemble your rafters. Rafters should be 24 inches long and evenly spaced. Be sure to cut the rafters in small notches that are sized to fit over the top rails of your roof. Drill pilot holes before securing them with structural screws.

For added support, you can add 6×6 lumber to your structure. These are posts that you attach to horizontal beams. Connect the posts to the beams with post to beam connectors. When the brackets are complete, secure them with 4 1/2” galvanized screws.

Once the posts and beams are completed, you can construct a pavilion over a concrete base. You can then add paving around the pavilion. Paving can be done using a stone or brick pattern. However, the design of your pergola should match the style of your property.

Once you have assembled your pavilion, you can begin the roofing process. The rafters should be secured with structural screws and rafter ties. You should also use deck screws for the close slats. Also, make sure to cut a few inches between the slats.

To protect your pavilion from decay, you can stain or paint the wood components. You can also fill in any cracks in the structure with wood filler. Use a medium-grit sandpaper to smooth out the rough spots. Finally, apply several coats of finish paint.

Roofing materials include rafters, knee braces, and shade planks. The roof deck should be constructed of 5/4 cedar decking. Nails should be 8d galvanized common nails. Roofing felt should be placed on the sides and the bottom of the ridge, and a 2” overlap should be created.

When you are finished, you should have a sturdy, open-sided pavilion. Now you are ready to enjoy your new outdoor space. Just be sure to take your time when you are working on your project. Keep an eye out for common construction mistakes to avoid unnecessary cost and time. Building a garden pavilion is a fun project that you can finish in just a few weekends.

Whether you are an experienced woodworker or a novice, you can enjoy the pleasure of constructing your own pavilion. Using a plan will keep your costs down and give you peace of mind that you are making a solid, functional pavilion.
